How we label AI

Many Christian apps now use AI. Some use it for small conveniences, others to write the devotionals and prayers you read. We label both, so you can choose.

AI use, from 0 to 4

  1. No AI listed. The app's listing describes no AI features.
  2. Assistive AI. AI only powers conveniences that do not write spiritual content, such as transcription, search, translation, or read-aloud.
  3. AI-assisted study. AI helps you engage with content written by people, such as summarizing a sermon or answering questions grounded in Scripture.
  4. AI-generated content. The app generates some of the spiritual content you read or hear, such as devotionals, prayers, reflections, or chat answers about faith.
  5. AI-first. AI-generated spiritual content is the heart of the app, such as an AI pastor, an AI Bible character to talk with, or devotionals written by AI.

How a rating is made

Claude, an AI model from Anthropic, reads each app's own store listing and our description, rates it on the scale above, and quotes the listing as evidence. We publish a rating only when it is made with medium or high confidence, we check it again whenever a listing changes, and an editor can correct or hide any rating.

A rating describes what an app's listing says. It is not a test of the app itself. Think we got one wrong? Tell us and a person will look at it.

AI-generated people in ads

Some apps advertise on Meta and TikTok with images and videos of people who appear to be AI-generated. When we confirm it, either from the platform's own AI label or by reviewing the ads ourselves, we note it on the app's page with a link to the ad.

Every app page also links to that app's Meta and TikTok ad libraries, so you can see its ads for yourself.
